The "Creative Ministry" competition has been defined to include ONLY these six performance categories:
- Puppet plays; live or prerecorded
- Ventriloquism routines
- Clown skits
- Mime routines
- Dowel rod performances
- Human videos
We have sponsored over 400 Regional Puppetry Festivals, and by experience have learned of the challenges and limitations of personnel and equipment. Therefore we have carefully restricted the categories so that we could be as fair and as consistent as possible. We have purposely not included categories of performance ministry such as drama, dance, and signing.
Much effort was expended to devise one judging form that could apply to all six of these performance styles.
"Creative Ministry" competition, as we have defined it, includes only the six categories. We'll allow minor elements of drama, dance, and signing in an entry, but your performance piece needs to be primarily one of the six listed categories.
Some guidelines:
- Mime is silent. It is not people talking back and forth, and it is not a live person lip-synching a song. Mime is the art of creating the illusion of reality by deliberate and well-executed movements and position of the human body.
- Dance is not a competition category. Be sure that the major focus of your performance is the category you have entered.
- Only dowel rods are acceptable. Umbrellas, baseball bats, plungers, crutches, golf clubs, etc. are not permissible when entering a dowel rod performance piece.
- Puppet skits cannot include singing where the puppets are lip-synching to a recorded song.
- Ventriloquism skits can include singing with a recorded sound track as long as the ventriloquist is producing the singing voice "live."
- "Beyond Words" puppet dramas, where there are no audible voices, are permissible. Bear in mind that you will lose some points on the score sheet because "lip synch" is one of the categories for which points are awarded.
- Sign Language or Signing is not a competition category.
- We will have four "wired" headset microphones available for use for live voice puppet skits, and either a microphone on a stand or a lavalier microphone for ventriloquism skits.
- A human video is a dramatic interpretation of a prerecorded song, done by one or more people. The music track must include the words of the song. The lyrics must be lip synched by one or more presenters. No live voice talking or singing is allowed. No props are allowed except chairs. Costumes are permissible, but costume changes or removals are not allowed. Be sure the presentation includes a clear biblical message with a developed storyline.
If our festival schedule allows, we will allow your group to perform a piece that doesn't fit the categories as a "demonstration." Your presentation will not be judged and you will not be eligible for the "People's Choice" award. This will be at the discretion of One Way Street staff and is not guaranteed.
We encourage you to bring puppet skits, ventriloquism skits, dowel rod song routines, or clown/mime skits. Variety in ministry is important, and we do want to see your creativity. We just want to be able to judge you fairly and competently, and to give you helpful feedback that will make your ministry more effectively.
